To Go, or Not to Go (to the Gym)

I recently saw a discussion in a Facebook group for fitness professionals about how some people were planning not to go back to their gyms after they reopened. And not just in Florida!

I’ve made the decision to stay out of recently opened gyms because where I live, Covid is definitely NOT over, in fact, it’s way worse than it was when the gyms were required to close.

But I got to thinking and I’m not surprised many people feel they are better off working out outside the gym.

Why?

Because all movement is exercise, and it doesn’t have to happen at the gym. It can literally happen everywhere, anytime you want.

This is what I help so many of my clients realize as they craft a healthy lifestyle that DOESN’T require hours at the gym every day.

Every time you move, you’re making your body healthier, and during the time the gyms have been closed, I’ve seen so many more people picking up not only at-home workout options but also alternative movement practices that don’t require equipment or weights or air conditioning.

I generally prefer non-gym workouts because:

-I like moving outdoors more than staying on a machine

-I don’t love being surrounded by mirrors

-I always feel like the more creative and fun the workout, the weirder I look doing it in a gym!

All across the country, traditional gyms sit empty, and people are finding new ways to exercise!

I’ve been able to make the most of my movement at home by going on daily walks (or runs when I feel up to it), swimming at a local pool, and doing yoga and workout videos in my living room or on my porch.

Even in the gym, I tend to enjoy the dumbbells more than any of the machines, and so all I need is a few pounds of weight and some space cleared on my floor.

Why go back?

The case for the gym:

As much as I may be team No-Gym, I do see that going to the gym has lots of benefits as well.

The gym is great for those who…

-prefer to work up a sweat inside, away from weather or sunburn concerns

-use stationary machines as part of their regular workouts (great for people targeting specific muscles)

-crave the motivation factor of being surrounded by other people working out as well

-appreciate the help and feedback of knowledgeable fitness professionals.

Whether you’d prefer to be in the gym, or you’re a happy homebody like me, the most important thing is that you keep moving. And, really, ALL movement is exercise.

This means you can get moving and stay healthy anywhere, anytime, without spending money.

Will you be heading back into the gym when it reopens? Or have you already gone back? I’d love to hear from you!
