Habit Shift: Cultivating a Waste-Free Bathroom

Yesterday I shaved my legs.

This is normally not a big deal.

I've done it probably several thousand times in my life by now.

But this time I did it with a safety razor.

You see, I am the kind of woman who carries a metal straw in her purse so that she does not need to accept plastic straws (normally). My deodorant comes in a glass jar instead of in a plastic one, and I don't use the plastic bags at the grocery.

I am trying my best to avoid using single-use plastics.

I'm not perfect. But every time I go to the store to pick up another plastic disposable razor, because they are way cheaper than buying a pack of replacement cartridges for a reusable plastic razor, I feel a twinge of guilt.

"This will be the last time," I say to myself as I put the neon pink razors in my cart. When these are spent, I will find a better option.

So far I've never followed through.

Until this week!!!

My razor had gotten dull and scratchy. It would no longer provide a smooth shave. It would only provide razor burn and possibly some bumps.

I stopped myself from buying new ones and instead turned to the wonderful world of the internet. I was able to find a handful of fairly affordable, sustainable options.

I looked through several but decided to go full-on eco-friendly, choosing a razor made of stainless steel and bamboo.

When it came in the mail I was in pretty desperate need of a shave. Surprisingly, though it took a bit longer than normal, I was able to get a great shave without cutting myself even once! Not even on the knees!

I am thrilled to be wearing shorts again this week and am happily doing so without the sense of hypocrisy and guilt that comes (for me) with using a cheap, disposable, plastic razor.

Remember, we don't need a few people doing this zero-waste thing perfectly. We need everyone doing it imperfectly.

Are you ready to start a more sustainable habit?

You're in luck! On Monday I'm starting a 21-day habit shift group. We'll dive into the things that help new habits stick and get rid of some old habits that are holding us back.
